Our Observation

For the customer….Hydrogen leak detectors can smaller leaks than a refrigerant leak detector. By nature, the hydrogen in the 5/95 mixture is high energy and does not pool in a flume or “hang around” as it is lighter than air and moves to space rapidly. Refrigerant gas is heavier than air and can form a plume in the area of the leak. This plume makes it more difficult to identify the correct leak location. So areas that could be identified as a leak could be an adjacent area. This brings in uncertainty which joint is actually leaking. Not repairing the proper leaking joint can cause another expensive service call.

For the HVAC technician….Using the 5%H2/95%N2 tracer gas allows the technician to reclaim refrigerant and then charge with the 5/95 tracer gas. The H2 leak detector can find smaller leaks that could be causing the issue. Not having to reclaim the refrigerant, find the leak then repair and test can be much more cumbersome and time consuming than using the 5/95 tracer gas then locating, repairing and then testing before introducing the reclaimed refrigerant gas back into the system. The 5/95 can be safely released into air or atmosphere when leak testing is completed.
